The Reedsy Book Editor, now called Reedsy Studio, is a free browser app that lets you write a book and typeset it into a print-ready PDF and an EPUB. For a clean, text-driven novel or nonfiction book, it is the best free formatting tool we know of. It will not write the book for you, and its three templates leave little room for custom design.
In this Reedsy Book Editor review, you’ll learn:
- Exactly what is free and what the paid add-ons cost, from Reedsy’s own pages
- What the export quality is like, and where the tool runs out of road
- Whether it is safe for an unpublished manuscript, and whether there is an app
- Where it genuinely beats our own product, and who should use something else
Here is the full assessment, as of November 2026.
What Is the Reedsy Book Editor?
The Reedsy Book Editor — a free, browser-based writing and typesetting app from Reedsy that turns your manuscript into a print-ready PDF and an EPUB ebook. Reedsy renamed it Reedsy Studio in 2025, but it is the same tool, still reached at editor.reedsy.com.
Reedsy launched it in 2016. The Studio page describes it as a writing app for authors, with a chapter sidebar, planning boards, real-time collaboration and one-click export.
The Book Editor is not Reedsy’s editors
This trips up a lot of searchers. The Reedsy Book Editor is software. Reedsy also runs a marketplace of human freelance editors, designers and ghostwriters, which is a separate, paid service.
This review covers only the software. For the people you can hire, read our Reedsy editors review. For the company as a whole, including the marketplace and Discovery, see our full Reedsy review.
Is the Reedsy Book Editor Free?
Is the Reedsy Book Editor free? Yes, for writing and formatting. Reedsy’s pricing page says the core features “will remain free,” including unlimited books, import, and PDF and EPUB export. Two optional add-ons cost extra, for advanced outlining, unlimited version history and writing stats.
Here is what the free plan includes, as listed on that page in November 2026:
- Advanced manuscript editor
- Import of an existing manuscript
- Export to print PDF and EPUB
- Unlimited books and unlimited devices
- One manuscript goal and basic writing stats
- 30-day writing history
- Read-only public previews for beta readers
- Planning boards, limited to card view
There is no export paywall. Reedsy’s write-a-book page puts it plainly: the core writing and formatting functions “are free — and they always will be.”
How Much Does the Reedsy Book Editor Cost?
The Reedsy Book Editor costs $0 for writing, formatting and export. The two add-ons are listed on Reedsy’s Studio page at $4.99 a month and $7.99 a month, with 10% off annual billing and a 30-day free trial that needs no credit card.
| Plan | Price (Nov 2026) | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Editor, import, PDF + EPUB export, collaboration, 30-day history, basic stats |
| Craft add-on | $4.99/month | Unlimited history, advanced stats, custom goals, daily check-ins, dark mode |
| Outlining add-on | $7.99/month | Unlimited boards and notes, attributes, writing templates, pinned notes |
One honest caveat on the numbers. The Studio page calls the cheaper tier “Studio Essential” while the pricing page calls it “Craft,” and the pricing page does not display prices in its source. The $4.99 and $7.99 figures come from the Studio page itself. Our Reedsy pricing guide covers the marketplace costs too.
The total cost of the workflow is what matters. Reedsy formats the inside of your book for free, but you still need a cover, an ISBN if you want one, and editing. The Book Editor does none of those.
What the Reedsy Book Editor Does Well
The Reedsy Book Editor does one job very well: it takes a plain manuscript and gives you a properly typeset book for nothing. Most free alternatives either cost money to export or produce a book that looks homemade.
Typesetting that looks professional. You pick from three themes on Reedsy’s formatting page: Reedsy (Lato and Merriweather, suited to nonfiction), Classic (Crimson) and Romance (Crimson with a decorative chapter title). Margins, spacing and indents are handled for you.
Standard print files. The PDF is built to PDF/X-1a:2001, the print-on-demand standard, and the ebook is a reflowable EPUB 3. Reedsy says both work with all major distributors. Amazon KDP accepts EPUB uploads, which our guide to formatting a book for KDP walks through.
Four common trim sizes. You can export at Pocket (4.25 x 6.87 inches), Reedsy standard (5 x 8), Digest (5.5 x 8.5) or Trade (6 x 9). Those cover most novels and nonfiction paperbacks.
Front matter on autopilot. Studio builds your table of contents and copyright page from your book settings. You add a dedication or preface as needed, and choose chapter openings with numbers, titles, drop caps or images.
Real-time collaboration. You can invite a co-author, editor or proofreader to work in the manuscript with comments and tracked changes. That is unusual in a free tool, and it saves the Word-file ping-pong.
Beta reader previews. You can share a formatted, read-only preview through an online e-reader, a chapter at a time or as a whole draft.
No AI training on your book. Reedsy’s FAQ states it “will never use it to train AI.” For an unpublished manuscript, that is the right policy.
Reedsy says Studio has helped “hundreds of thousands of authors” publish. That is the company’s own figure, not an audited one.
What the Reedsy Book Editor Does Not Do Well
The Reedsy Book Editor trades flexibility for simplicity. If your book fits its templates, that trade is a gift. If it does not, you will hit walls quickly.
Design is locked to three templates. You cannot change body fonts, heading styles or margins. A hands-on Built Written review, tested in September 2026, found margins, fonts and image sizes all fixed by the template.
Images and tables are weak. The same test found the insert menu offers only images, endnotes and scene breaks. A table in the imported Word file was dropped entirely, and images cannot be resized. Cookbooks, workbooks and picture-heavy books belong elsewhere.
Imports need cleanup. Studio accepts .docx and .odt files. In the Built Written test, it split chapters at each Heading 1, but the tester still had to fix promoted subheads, a stray extra chapter and double numbering by hand.
A Reedsy credit you may not want. That review also reported a “professionally typeset on Reedsy” line on the exported copyright page that the form could not remove. Check your own export before you upload.
No cover tool. You upload a finished cover image. There is no cover designer or spine calculator, so a print wrap is still your problem.
Browser only, no offline mode. Asked about offline use, Reedsy’s FAQ answers “Not yet.” If your internet drops, so does your writing session.
Planning moved behind a paywall. In 2025, unlimited boards and pinned notes became part of the paid add-ons. Writer Jennifer Peaslee called it “Reedsy Editor Betrayed Me” and went back to Scrivener when a character board asked for $7.99 a month.
It does not write the book. It is a blank page with great typesetting at the end. Every word in between is still yours to produce.
Is the Reedsy Book Editor Safe?
Is the Reedsy Book Editor safe? Yes, for most authors. Reedsy is an established company founded in 2014, the app is free with no hidden export fee, and Reedsy states it will never use your manuscript to train AI. The main risk is that your book lives in the cloud, so keep your own backups.
Studio saves to your Reedsy account, and the free plan keeps 30 days of writing history. From your bookshelf, choose Manage, then Exports, then Back Up, and Reedsy emails you a link to download the manuscript as a Word file. Do that at every milestone.
Is There a Reedsy Book Editor App or Free Download?
Is there a Reedsy Book Editor app or free download? No. Reedsy’s FAQ says Studio is “not a downloadable app” and works only in a browser while you are logged in. There is no dedicated mobile app either, though it runs in mobile browsers and you can add it to your home screen.
Any site offering a “Reedsy Book Editor download” is not offering Reedsy’s product. Go to reedsy.com and sign in instead. The FAQ on finding Studio confirms the browser-only setup.
Does Reedsy Have a Free Book Formatting Template for Word?
Does Reedsy have a free book formatting template for Word? No. Reedsy offers no downloadable Word template. Its free option is the online editor itself, with three built-in themes. You can import a Word file, and you can back up your manuscript as a Word file, but formatting happens inside Studio.
If you want to stay in Word, start with our free book templates. If you would rather not fight Word’s section breaks, Studio is the easier route for a simple book.
How to Use the Reedsy Book Editor
How do you use the Reedsy Book Editor? Create a free Reedsy account, open your bookshelf, then import or start a book. Write or paste your chapters, set the book’s details, then go to Exports, choose a theme, trim size and options, and Reedsy emails you the finished files.
Here are the steps in a little more detail:
- Sign up and open your bookshelf. Click Books, then open your bookshelf.
- Import or create. Upload a .docx or .odt file, or start a blank book. Style chapter titles as Heading 1 before you import.
- Clean up the structure. Check that every chapter split correctly. Fix stray chapters and double numbering now, not after export.
- Fill in front matter. Add your title, author name, dedication and copyright details. Studio builds the table of contents.
- Export. Under Manage, then Exports, pick a theme, trim size, drop caps and endnote placement, then click Export book.
- Proof the files. Open the PDF and the EPUB. Check the copyright page, page breaks and any images before you upload to a retailer.
Expect to export more than once while you fix small issues, so build that time into your schedule.
What Real Users Say
Reedsy as a company holds a 4.7 TrustScore across 2,024 reviews on Trustpilot, as of November 2026. Those reviews cover the whole company, mostly the marketplace, not just the Book Editor.
The reviews that mention the writing app praise the clean writing space and automatic formatting. One reviewer called it “unbelievably user-friendly.” Complaints there focus on support and disputes, not the app.
Independent testers are more mixed. Built Written praised the clean body text, hyphenation, running heads and curly-quote conversion, then flagged the import cleanup and fixed design. Peaslee’s complaint is about the 2025 paywall on planning features, not the formatting.
The pattern: plain-prose authors love it, while authors who want design control or a full planning suite outgrow it.
Who Should Use the Reedsy Book Editor
The Reedsy Book Editor is the right tool if any of these fit you:
- You have a finished or nearly finished manuscript in plain prose: a novel, memoir or text-led nonfiction book
- You want a professional-looking interior for $0 and are happy with one of three themes
- You work with an editor or co-author and want tracked changes in one shared manuscript
- You publish on KDP, IngramSpark or a similar platform and need a print PDF and an EPUB
Who Should Not Use the Reedsy Book Editor
Walk away, or pair it with something else, if any of these describe you:
- Your book is image- or table-heavy. Cookbooks, workbooks and photo books need a layout tool with real image control.
- You want custom design. If you care about your own fonts or chapter art, a paid formatter gives you far more control. Our book formatting software roundup compares the options, and our Reedsy alternatives list covers tools that replace each part of Reedsy.
- You often write offline. No offline mode and no desktop app make it a poor fit for trains, planes and patchy Wi-Fi.
- Your book is not written yet. The editor gives you a blank page. If the blank page is the problem, a formatting tool does not solve it.
Where Reedsy Book Editor Beats Chapter
The Reedsy Book Editor beats Chapter on price and on hands-on control of your own words, and we would rather say so plainly. If any of these describe you, Reedsy is the better pick.
It is free. Writing, formatting and export cost nothing. Chapter is $97 one time and has no free plan or trial.
It is built for writing every word yourself. If you want to type each sentence, Studio’s distraction-free editor is designed for that. Chapter is built to produce the manuscript with you, not to be a blank page.
Live collaboration with your editor. Inviting a human editor into the manuscript with tracked changes is a genuine strength. Chapter is built to produce the manuscript, not to be a shared editing room, so many authors bring a finished draft into Studio for exactly this.
It typesets a finished manuscript for free. If your book is already written, you do not need to buy anything from us to get clean print and ebook files. Studio does that job well.
The Alternative We Built
The Reedsy Book Editor solves the last mile of a manuscript you already have. Many authors searching for it are stuck earlier: the book is not written, or it is written and the whole publishing job still feels out of reach.
Our Pick — Chapter
Chapter writes the complete book with you. You give it your topic or story, your reader and your preferences, and it produces a complete, structured manuscript in your voice, ready to format in Reedsy Studio or anywhere else. More than 10,000 authors have used it, and you keep 100% of your rights.
Best for: authors whose book is not written yet, fiction or nonfiction Pricing: $97 one time, 2 books included (fiction or nonfiction), no subscription, 30-day money-back guarantee Why we built it: a free formatting tool is worthless until there is a manuscript to format, and writing it is where most authors stall
For novels, use Chapter’s fiction software. Our Chapter review covers what it does not do.
If you want the whole publishing job done
For Chapter authors who want more than a formatted file, we built Chapter Publishing AI. As of November 2026, it costs $997 a year for unlimited books, and it handles what Reedsy Studio leaves to you:
| Reedsy Book Editor | Chapter Publishing AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free (add-ons $4.99–$7.99/month) | $997 a year, unlimited books |
| Editing and proofreading | You hire someone | AI editing and proofreading |
| Cover | You supply it | A cover for every book, full print wrap |
| Formats | Print PDF + EPUB | Paperback, hardcover and Kindle |
| ISBNs | You buy them | 3 ISBNs per book |
| Keywords, categories, Amazon listing | You do it | Done for you |
| Distribution | You upload | Live on Amazon in 24–72 hours, then 45,000+ stores and libraries |
| Rights and royalties | 100% yours | 100% yours |
Publishing AI is built for Chapter authors and includes pre-publishing checks before anything goes live. If you only need clean files for a book you wrote yourself, the free Book Editor is the smarter spend. If you want the book published without learning the process, see Chapter Publishing AI.
The Reedsy Book Editor formats a book you have already written. If the manuscript is the missing piece, Chapter for nonfiction and Chapter for fiction write the complete book for $97 one time, with 2 books included, no subscription and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
FAQ
Is the Reedsy Book Editor free?
Yes, the Reedsy Book Editor is free for writing, formatting and export. You get unlimited books and print PDF and EPUB files with no watermark. Reedsy sells two optional add-ons, at $4.99 and $7.99 a month, for unlimited version history, advanced stats and expanded outlining boards.
Is the Reedsy Book Editor the same as Reedsy Studio?
Yes, the Reedsy Book Editor and Reedsy Studio are the same product. Reedsy renamed the Book Editor to Studio in 2025 and added planning boards and paid add-ons. The free writing and formatting tools carried over, and you still sign in at editor.reedsy.com.
Can you use the Reedsy Book Editor for Amazon KDP?
Yes, you can use the Reedsy Book Editor for Amazon KDP. It exports a reflowable EPUB 3 for Kindle ebooks and a PDF/X-1a print file at standard trim sizes such as 5 x 8 and 6 x 9 inches. Check the exported copyright page and preview both files before you upload.
Does the Reedsy Book Editor work offline?
No, the Reedsy Book Editor does not work offline. It runs only in a web browser while you are signed in to your Reedsy account, and Reedsy’s FAQ answers “Not yet” on offline use. Back up your manuscript as a Word file regularly so a dropped connection never costs you work.
What is the best Reedsy Book Editor alternative?
The best Reedsy Book Editor alternative depends on the gap. For more design control, a paid formatter such as Atticus or Vellum suits you better. If the gap is the manuscript itself, Chapter writes the complete book for $97 one time, and you can still format it free in Reedsy Studio.
