Kindle Create is Amazon’s free desktop app for formatting a finished manuscript into a Kindle ebook and a simple paperback. It is genuinely good for text-heavy books like novels and memoirs that you plan to sell only on Amazon. It is a poor fit if your book has tables, footnotes or a custom print design, or if you want to sell beyond Kindle.

In this Kindle Create review, you’ll learn:

  • What Kindle Create does, how it works, and what it exports, from Amazon’s own pages
  • Where it falls short, and how to fix the most common Kindle formatting issues
  • How it compares on cost and features with Atticus, Vellum, Reedsy Studio and Word
  • Who should use it, who should walk away, and where it beats us

Here is the full assessment, checked against Amazon’s documentation on November 4, 2026.

What Is Kindle Create?

Kindle Create is a free desktop application from Amazon that turns a completed manuscript into a formatted Kindle ebook, and optionally a paperback, ready to upload to Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).

Amazon’s Kindle Create product page calls it “a free desktop application” and claims 400,000+ authors use it. That user figure is Amazon’s own and is not independently audited.

As of November 2026, KDP’s Getting Started with Kindle Create page lists these specs:

Kindle Create (as of November 2026)
PriceFree
PlatformsWindows 10 or later; macOS 10.15 or later (Apple silicon: macOS 11 or later)
RAM4 GB minimum, 8 GB recommended

ExportsKPF (Kindle Package Format); EPUB for reflowable books only
Book typesReflowable, Interactive Print Replica, Comics and Kids’ books with Guided View
PrintPaperback from the same project file, uploaded to KDP as KPF
CoversNot supported

Is Kindle Create free?

Yes, Kindle Create is free. Amazon offers it as a “free download for PC” and Mac, with no paid tier, subscription or upgrade. Publishing the KPF file it produces on KDP is also free. You only pay for the things it does not do, such as cover design and editing.

Is there a Kindle Create app for iPad, Android or Chromebook?

No, Kindle Create is a desktop app for Windows and Mac only. Amazon lists no iPad, iPhone, Android, Linux, Chromebook or web version. If you search for a “Kindle Create app” on a phone store, anything you find is not Amazon’s formatter.

How do you download Kindle Create, and is it safe?

Download Kindle Create only from KDP’s own help page, which links separate installers for Windows and macOS. Amazon says all KDP tool downloads go through virus and spyware scanning. Kindle Create from kdp.amazon.com is safe; third-party “free download” mirrors are an unnecessary risk.

How Does Kindle Create Work?

Kindle Create works as a finishing step, not a writing tool. You write the book in Word, Google Docs or Pages, import the DOCX, tag chapters and apply a theme, preview it on simulated devices, then export a KPF file and upload it to KDP. Amazon itself recommends against writing a book inside the app.

Amazon’s recommended workflow for a reflowable ebook has five steps:

  1. Finish your manuscript in a word processor. Google Docs, Pages and OpenOffice all export DOCX.
  2. Import the DOCX into Kindle Create. It detects chapters and builds a table of contents.
  3. Format the book. Pick one of four themes, style chapter titles and first paragraphs, add images, and set up front matter.
  4. Preview it in the built-in Previewer, which simulates tablets, phones and Kindle e-readers.
  5. Export a KPF file and upload it on KDP, which converts it for every Kindle device.

For a paperback, you reopen the same project, choose a trim size on KDP, and Kindle Create calculates the margins and adds page numbers for you. If you have never formatted a book before, our guide to formatting a book for Kindle explains the manuscript prep that makes this step smooth.

What Kindle Create Does Well

Kindle Create does the core job well: it makes a clean, reflowable Kindle book from a plain Word file, for free, with no design skill. Several strengths stand out.

It costs nothing and comes from Amazon. You are using the tool KDP was built around, so KPF files rarely trip its upload checks. KDP’s own supported formats page calls KPF “a go-to method for avoiding any formatting issues.”

Chapter detection and the table of contents are automatic. If your manuscript uses Word heading styles, Kindle Create finds the chapters and builds both a TOC page and the Kindle interactive TOC.

It supports Kindle-only typography. KPF files carry Enhanced Typesetting, Page Flip and drop caps. Amazon says it does not offer MOBI export because MOBI lacks those features.

One project makes the ebook and the paperback. KDP’s eBook and paperback guide says Kindle Create handles margins, TOC page numbers and footers automatically, and starts chapter one on a right-facing page.

It handles books Word cannot. Interactive Print Replica adds audio, video and image pop-ups to a PDF textbook or cookbook. Guided View moves readers panel by panel through comics and children’s books, and Amazon says Kindle Create is the only way to make those.

What Kindle Create Does Not Do Well

Kindle Create’s limits are real, and Amazon documents most of them itself. They matter most for nonfiction, print-heavy books and authors who sell beyond Amazon.

Tables, lists and footnotes are not editable. You fix them in Word and paste the content back in. For paperbacks, KDP says Kindle Create “doesn’t support paperbacks with tables, footnotes, or endnotes.”

Print design is locked. You cannot change paperback margins, fonts, font size or line spacing. Amazon’s FAQ says Kindle Create may change the font you chose, and recommends Word if you need control.

Themes cannot be edited. You get four built-in themes and no custom styles. Your book will look tidy, but it will look like other Kindle Create books.

Images are basic. There are no image captions, inline images cannot be edited, and print images cannot bleed to the page edge. Images that do not fit can leave blank space at the bottom of a page.

KPF only works on Amazon. Amazon lists “publishing outside of Kindle” as unsupported. There is no print-ready PDF export, so you cannot take your paperback file to IngramSpark or Lulu.

There are no covers and no cloud backup. Kindle Create formats interiors only, and Amazon does not keep a copy of your project. Lose the KCB work file and you rebuild the book to update it.

Editing tools are thin. The Kindlepreneur review notes there is no find and replace, spell check or word count, so you make text changes in your source file first.

Does Kindle Create Export EPUB?

Yes, Kindle Create exports EPUB, but only for reflowable books. As of November 2026, KDP lists two export formats: KPF, which it recommends for Kindle, and EPUB. The EPUB loses some Kindle features: image bleeds, drop caps taller than three lines, and chapter-start images.

This has changed over time. A reviewer writing in April 2025 said the app no longer offered EPUB export, while Amazon’s current help page lists it. If you do not see the option, check Help > About Kindle Create and update.

How do you make an EPUB file with Kindle Create?

To make an EPUB file, import your DOCX as a reflowable book, format it, then choose EPUB when you export. That EPUB works on Apple Books, Kobo and other non-Kindle readers. For wider stores, many authors still use a dedicated formatter with full EPUB support, and our guide to converting EPUB to Kindle covers the reverse direction.

What Is the Best Format for Kindle?

The best format for a Kindle ebook is KPF from Kindle Create, according to Amazon, because it supports every Kindle feature. KDP also accepts DOCX and EPUB. KDP stopped accepting MOBI for fixed-layout ebooks in March 2025, so do not start a new book in MOBI.

Here is how the main Amazon KDP ebook formats compare:

FormatMade withWorks outside AmazonBest for
KPFKindle CreateNoKindle-only ebooks and simple paperbacks
DOCXWord, Google Docs, PagesYes, as a source fileSimple books, if you check the result in Kindle Previewer
EPUBAtticus, Vellum, Reedsy, Kindle Create (reflowable)YesSelling on Kindle and other stores from one file
MOBILegacy toolsRarelyNothing new; KDP no longer accepts it for fixed-layout books

If you plan to sell only on Kindle, KPF is the simplest path. If you want Apple Books and Kobo too, a clean EPUB from one source is usually the better master file.

How Do You Fix Kindle Formatting Issues in Kindle Create?

Most Kindle Create formatting issues come from the source file or an outdated app. Update Kindle Create, use Word heading styles, fix tables and lists in Word, and import from your desktop rather than a cloud drive. KDP’s own troubleshooting covers each of these.

From KDP’s own troubleshooting guidance:

  • Update the app. Amazon says the “Last Updated” date under Help > About Kindle Create should be less than three months old.
  • Use real heading styles. Set chapter titles as Heading 1 in Word so chapter detection works.
  • Fix tables, lists and footnotes at the source. Edit them in Word, then paste the new content into Kindle Create.
  • Check the file name. Names over 250 characters or with special characters fail on import.
  • Import from your desktop. Files opened from a USB drive or cloud folder can cause import errors.
  • Fix export errors with a fresh folder. Create a new folder, use Save Project As with a new name, then export into that folder.

If your Word file itself is messy, start with our guide on how to format a book in Word. Clean styles fix most problems before Kindle Create ever sees the file.

How Much Does Kindle Create Cost Compared With Alternatives?

Kindle Create costs nothing, and so does publishing on KDP. The real cost of the workflow is everything it leaves out: a cover, editing, and, if you want to sell wide, a second formatting tool, because KPF only works on Amazon.

Here is the formatting software side, checked on each vendor’s site on November 4, 2026:

ToolPricePlatformsEbook outputPrint outputSells outside Amazon
Kindle CreateFreeWindows, MacKPF, EPUB (reflowable)KPF for KDP paperbackLimited (EPUB only)
Reedsy StudioFree core planWeb browserEPUBPrint-ready PDFYes
Atticus$147 one timeWindows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, browserEPUB, DOCXPrint-ready PDFYes
Vellum$199.99 ebooks; $249.99 with printMac onlyEbook filesPaperback files (Press)Yes

Atticus is a one-time purchase with future updates included. Vellum sells Ebooks at $199.99 and Press, which adds paperbacks, at $249.99, and runs only on macOS 13 or newer.

One cost claim deserves a correction. Some reviews say Kindle Create’s larger KPF files raise Amazon’s per-megabyte delivery fee. Amazon’s FAQ says the exported KPF file “is not used to calculate the file size” for royalties, so check the delivery cost shown in KDP when you publish.

Kindle Create vs Atticus, Vellum, Reedsy and Word

The best Kindle Create alternative depends on where you sell. For Amazon-only novels, Kindle Create is enough. For wide distribution or nonfiction with footnotes, Atticus is the best value. Vellum suits Mac users who want polished design. Reedsy Studio is the free option for EPUB and print PDF.

Kindle Create vs Atticus

Atticus wins on flexibility. It runs on almost any computer, includes a writing editor and footnotes, exports EPUB and print PDF from the same file, and has a custom theme builder. Kindle Create wins only on price. Our Atticus review covers it in depth.

Kindle Create vs Vellum

Vellum is the long-standing choice for polished interiors and makes unlimited ebooks and, with Press, paperbacks. It costs up to $249.99 and needs a Mac. If you are on Windows or spending nothing, Kindle Create is the practical choice. See our Vellum review.

Kindle Create vs Reedsy Studio

Reedsy Studio is free like Kindle Create, but it runs in a browser and exports EPUB and print-ready PDF that work anywhere. Kindle Create has deeper Kindle features, such as Guided View and Print Replica. Our Reedsy review covers the wider Reedsy marketplace.

Kindle Create vs Word

Word gives you full control over a paperback’s fonts, margins and spacing, which Kindle Create locks. Kindle Create gives a cleaner ebook with less effort. Many authors use both: Word for the print PDF, Kindle Create for the ebook.

What Real Users Say About Kindle Create

Kindle Create reviews are broadly positive for simple books and critical for anything complex. Authors praise how easy and free it is; complaints focus on locked print design, KPF lock-in, and quirks in how it styles headings. Amazon’s own page features only positive testimonials, which it selected.

Kindlepreneur rates Kindle Create as a workable free option for one or two Amazon-only books. Its tutorial and review, updated April 2026, lists no footnotes, fixed margins, four themes and no cloud backup. Kindlepreneur’s founder, Dave Chesson, also makes Atticus, which the review recommends.

Novelist Alex Diaz-Granados gave it 3.5 out of 5 in an April 2025 review after formatting two novels. The review praises the interface but reports subheads changing capitalization, “PM” turning into “Pm,” and edits reverting without warning.

Amazon itself acknowledges the gaps. Its paperback FAQ says it is “working on improvements” to font choices, and lists tables, lists and footnotes as known limitations.

We found no large, verified review dataset for Kindle Create, so treat any single star rating you see online with caution.

Where Kindle Create Beats Chapter

Kindle Create beats Chapter on several things that matter, and if any of these describe you, it may be all you need.

Price. Kindle Create is free. Chapter is $97 one time for 2 books, and Chapter’s Publishing AI is $997 a year. If your manuscript is finished and your budget is zero, Kindle Create wins outright.

Your words, untouched. Kindle Create only formats what you wrote. If you want no AI anywhere in your book, it is the cleaner choice.

Comics and picture books. Amazon says Kindle Create is the only way to make Guided View comics and kids’ ebooks, and it adds audio and video to Print Replica textbooks. Chapter writes fiction and nonfiction manuscripts, not panel-based books.

Amazon’s own pipeline. KPF is Amazon’s preferred format, built for Kindle features like Enhanced Typesetting. Nothing formats for Kindle more natively.

Who Should Use Kindle Create

Kindle Create fits a specific author well:

  • You have a finished, text-heavy manuscript, such as a novel, memoir or essay collection
  • You plan to sell only on Amazon, ideally in KDP Select
  • You want a simple paperback and are happy with automatic margins and fonts
  • You are making a comic, children’s book or interactive textbook for Kindle
  • You want to spend nothing on formatting software

Who Should Not Use Kindle Create

Walk away if any of these describe you:

  • Your book has tables, footnotes or endnotes. Nonfiction with citations will fight the tool at every step.
  • You want to publish wide. KPF does not work on IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Apple or Kobo, and there is no print PDF.
  • You care about print design. Fixed fonts and margins mean you cannot match a genre’s look.
  • You need a cover. Kindle Create does none; our guide on how to design a book cover covers your options.
  • Your book is not written yet. Amazon says to import only a finished manuscript. A formatter does nothing for an empty file.

The Alternative We Built

Kindle Create solves the last step of a book. Most authors who search for it are stuck at one of two other steps: the manuscript is not finished, or the publishing work around formatting feels like too much.

Our Pick — Chapter

Chapter is AI book writing software that takes you from an idea to a complete, structured manuscript in your voice, for nonfiction or fiction. More than 10,000 authors have used it. You keep 100% of the rights, then format and publish however you choose, including with Kindle Create.

Best for: authors who do not have a finished manuscript yet Pricing: $97 one time, 2 books included (fiction or nonfiction), no subscription, 30-day money-back guarantee Why we built it: Kindle Create, like every formatter, assumes the book already exists, and writing it is where most authors stall.

For the second problem, we built Chapter Publishing AI for Chapter authors. As of November 2026, it costs $997 a year for unlimited books and covers the work Kindle Create leaves to you:

Kindle CreateChapter Publishing AI
PriceFree$997 a year, unlimited books
Editing and proofreadingNoAI editing and proofreading
CoverNoA cover for every book, with full print wrap

Keywords, categories, Amazon listingNoYes
Pre-publishing checksPreviewer onlyYes
DistributionAmazon onlyAmazon in 24 to 72 hours, then 45,000+ stores and libraries
Rights and royalties100% yours100% yours

Chapter has honest limits. There is no free tier or trial, and Publishing AI is a yearly cost that only makes sense if you publish more than one book or value the time saved. If you have one finished novel for Kindle, Kindle Create is the better deal. Our Chapter review covers who it does not fit.

If your book is still unwritten, Chapter for nonfiction and Chapter for fiction write the complete manuscript for $97 one time, with 2 books included, no subscription and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

FAQ

Can you use a Kindle Create file outside Amazon?

You cannot use a Kindle Create KPF file outside Amazon. KPF uploads only to KDP, and Amazon lists publishing outside Kindle as unsupported. For other stores, export an EPUB from a reflowable project, or use a formatter such as Atticus, Vellum or Reedsy Studio that also makes print PDFs.

Does Kindle Create make hardcover books?

Kindle Create’s hardcover support is unclear. Amazon’s product page says you can prepare “a paperback or hardcover” from one manuscript, but KDP’s detailed print help pages describe only paperbacks. If you need a hardcover, check the format options in KDP when you upload, or format the interior in Word.

Can Kindle Create design a book cover?

No, Kindle Create cannot design a book cover. Amazon calls it an interior formatting tool and says you upload the cover as a separate file on KDP. Amazon also advises against inserting the cover inside your book file, because that duplicates content in the ebook.

Can you write a whole book in Kindle Create?

You can type in Kindle Create, but Amazon recommends against writing a whole book there. Its FAQ says to finish the manuscript in a word processor first, because tables, lists and complex paragraphs are not editable and replacing content later loses some formatting.

Is Kindle Create still supported in 2026?

Yes, Kindle Create is still supported as of November 2026. KDP’s help pages list current downloads for Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.15 or later, plus an Early Access beta for ebooks in five Indian languages. Amazon asks you to keep your copy updated within three months.
